2016 Avery's Carnival
We would like to thank all our volunteers, sponsors, and community friends who came out to make this year's carnival a great day for our honorees and pay tribute
to Avery and all our heroes!
On October 22, 2016, the Dance to Inspire Foundation in memory of Avery J successfully held their first fundraiser as a newly formed charitable organization. The 9th Annual Avery’s Carnival held at the Standing Ovation School of Dance on Saturday. Despite the weather, hundreds of people came to support the foundation’s event that honored three local residents who are fighting cancer: Piper Coqueran, Matthew Dougard and Lisa Nicol.
The history of Avery’s Carnival began with a little girl named Avery Judith who loved her Saturday morning dance class, and was diagnosed with medulla blastoma, a rare form of brain cancer. She lost her battle in 2008, the same year that she was diagnosed. Michele Hulsart and Jennifer Cali, both directors at the Standing Ovation School of Dance, created the Avery’s Carnival in Avery’s memory. To date, the carnival has raised and donated thousands of dollars to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in Avery’s name and to local families that have dealt with the hardship of cancer. In 2015, The Buerger Center for Advanced Pediatric Care at CHOP was completed, and in that building, an exam room was named in Avery J. Lubrecht's honor. The Dance to Inspire Foundation in memory of Avery J. will carry on the successful tradition of Avery’s Carnival with Avery family’s blessing, who have since relocated.
Saturday’s event was filled with dozens of fun interaction games and rides for kids of all ages and their families. Locally sponsored by several businesses helped provide the events for the children. Seashore Amusements of Brick provided the rides, inflatables, games, cotton candy and popcorn machines which were a huge success. The Luccarelli family generously provided the pumpkins for the children. Face painting, spray tattoos and a clown artist provided by Party Magic made the kids sparkle and glow. The dance teachers and student dance assistants at Standing Ovation School of Dance wore character costumes provided by Playtime Costumes of Freehold. Tirecraft of Point Pleasant, Zarrilli Homes of Brick and Russo Seamless Gutters LLC of Farmingdale sponsored the Game Truck and the Party Magic activities. Food was sponsored by Tom Moore Foods of South Hackensack, Mike’s Pizza of Brick, Rita’s Ice on Route 9, Toms River, and Richardson Veterinary Clinic of Brick. The energizing music was provided by DJ Richie Sparta who was gracious to donate his time to Avery’s Carnival. Prizes for the children were donated by Standing Ovation families through Avery’s Giving Tree.
A highlight of the day’s event was when the Brick Little League Bees and the Brick American Bulldogs’ baseball teams came in uniform to present the Dance to Inspire Foundation in memory of Avery J with a check for $780 dollars, money they raised through their own fundraising for childhood cancer.
“We are truly inspired by people’s generosity to help the community,” stated Jennifer Cali, the Board President of the Dance to Inspire Foundation.
Michele Hulsart, the executive director of the Dance to Inspire Foundation shared, “I truly believe that Avery is always looking over us on her day.” Michele shared that she had met a mother of a little girl today that heard about the carnival and wanted see what it was all about. Her daughter has a brain tumor but is in remission. Recently, at a check up at CHOP, she was examined in the room that was dedicated to Avery J. and her daughter told her mom that they had to come to the carnival to see what it is all about. “We are grateful to have met them.” Michele stated.
Proceeds to this year’s carnival will help Matthew, Piper and Lisa with their fight to get well. Dance to Inspire Foundation in memory of Avery J is truly humbled by the community’s support and their generosity.
